So many things in life are complicated; we may see things as though they are, but, things rarely present as a simplified black and white “All-or-Nothing” proposition.
But you gotta love the dedication and determination of Caregivers!
You might be a Caregiver if…
you can choose either side of an argument…
The strength, purpose and independent nature of a Caregiver’s spirit has always amazed me!
When it pertains the well-being of Others they are rational and flexible; when it comes to their own circumstances, not so much.
I’ve watched as some of the most capable, rational, sound thinking people I’ve ever encountered will hunker down and hold fast to an opinion, a belief that is not accurate or helpful, even hurtful to them because they see it as a non-negotiable matter of fact.
Don’t take my word for it. Marketing and advertisements play and prey on this with commercials that remind us; “Because after all… you promised mom she would always live at home!”
We all strive for Independence but often fail to realize the dual meaning of the word; “freedom from control or influence…” but also from, “support, aid or the like, of others.”
While I applaud the singular focus of Caregivers… I caution against the isolating outcomes of black and white, “All-or-Nothing” thinking (a form of distorted thinking we all adopt when under stress… to learn more: 10 Cognitive Distortions and How to Untwist Them)
Remember… you are not just a Caregiver you are also an Individual… and sometimes your Caregiver Independence can interfere with your Personal/Individual Independence… it is not an “All-or-Nothing” proposition… you do not have to be “All Alone” to exercise your Independence.
I want to help you see an awareness that you can declare a day of personal Independence too!
Thank YOU for Caring!
